Can research identify common characteristics in educational movements inspired by N.F.S. Grundtvig? This anthology presents sixteen articles exploring the diverse learning communities connected to the 2019 International Folk High School Summit in Copenhagen and the subsequent cooperation project People’s Future Lab. Drawing on empirical studies of institutions linked to the Grundtvigian heritage, the authors examine shared traits and compare them with global civic education currents represented by Paulo Freire and Rabindranath Tagore.
Initiated and edited by the Global Network for Folk high school Research, the book features the network’s projects and those of invited contributors.
Johan Lövgren is Associate Professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway and Chair of Global Network for Folk High School Research.

Customized Sun and Soil Poster
The Danes have emphasized that the folk school is not something to be exported to another place, but rather viewed as a source of inspiration. Ludwig Schroeder in 1872 said, “Stick your finger down into the ground and smell where you are! This is where the needs of the people are found, which can be different in different times and places. Where this meets the abilities of the teacher, there lies the hojskole’s calling.”
The original artwork was created by Artist Zoe Klosterwill for the 2025 Folk School Alliance Gathering poster. We are now offering digital images of the poster customized for your folk school which can be printed to promote your school or sold in your school’s store. Support the work of the Folk School Alliance and carry the message of knowing and meeting community needs through this beautiful representation of the purpose and process of folk schools.
